Another technology I am experimenting with is digital audio recording. Aural literacy is an important competency, and digital audio recordings are a unique way to demonstrate and assess aural literacy.
In order to play with digital audio recordings in a 'real-life' way, I created a Voki to support the debating activity on my wikispaces site. A Voki is an animated talking character, which can 'speak' based on typed text or a recorded sound file.
Having experienced the vokis embedded in the learning resources for this course each week, I can appreciate that Vokis can be a useful and punchy introduction to a particular topic or page. Creating a Voki was actually quite straightforward. It involved setting up a Voki account, playing around with the character options (gender, appearance) and making an audio recording using my headphones/microphone. I am beginning to accumulate quite an array of usernames/passwords for the digital technologies I am experimenting with!
It took several attempts to get the sound file right, as there was a short gap before the sound began recording and the length of the recording is limited to 60 seconds. I then embedded the Voki onto the debating page of my wiki.
This was a fun exercise which could be readily replicated by students.
